Direk Emille and her sisters used the filmmaker’s 34th birthday on October 10 as a cover story, telling Barlan that the family gathering was simply a third birthday celebration for Direk Emille—following earlier festivities in New York City with her British partner, Louis Byron.

The clever ruse ensured Barlan didn’t suspect a thing before Professor Tulabot popped the question in the picturesque setting.
