Spoiler-Free Review: Maine Mendoza Shines in Destined to be Yours Pilot Episode

We were one of the lucky few to have been invited to watch the first episode of the anticipated first primetime series of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza or popularly known to their fans as the AlDub.

Before anything else, here’s the full trailer of Destined to be Yours:

From their surprise tandem in Eat Bulaga‘s Juan for All, All for Juan segment that turned into Kalyeserye, all eyes are on Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards as they make afternoon viewing more exciting than ever.

Richards, who have been in the industry for quite a while and have starred in numerous series, already has the experience in “teleserye acting” while Mendoza on the other hand, has never starred in one.

That’s why it was a delight to see Mendoza act impressively in the pilot episode of her first television series, and it’s safe to say that her character drives the story of Destined to be Yours. Honestly, like what I’ve said in my Imagine You & Me review, Mendoza has knack in light and comedic scenes but was having a hard time with her dramatic scenes. They were not bad, but passable. But here, she has improved a lot.

Not only that there’s no awkwardness in acting in her anymore, the dramatic scenes were presented nicely. Maine Mendoza as Sinag will be the center of everything and from the looks of the first episode, Mendoza seems to be ready to take on the challenge and give her character Sinag justice until the end.

But the entire run of the series can’t be successful if it’s only because of Mendoza. Alden Richards has proven that he’s not just another pretty face in the showbiz industry but also a versatile actor which can be proven by his numerous awards. Richards as Benjie is set to charm the viewers with his can-do attitude and being a family oriented person that is a very Filipino trait.

Janice de Belen, Gardo Versoza, Lotlot de Leon are all veterans and knows how to play their part. Juancho Trivino, Sheena Halili, Dominic Roco and RJ Padilla are fun as supporting characters to Benjie and Sinag.

Yes, the story is cliched and maybe have been done more than we can remember, but this is the first series of Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards together. Their love team has to go through this type of story whether it’s new or not. And in the end, it will always depends on the execution, and so far, the first episode of Destined to Be Yours is off to a great start. Some of the scenes were shot cinematically even though some could be better, vibrant colors, impressive acting and the whole episode was charming with a small amount of drama needed for character development.

There’s a lot of room for improvement but so far, Destined to be Yours is definitely packed with more than what fans could ask for. And maybe, along the way, the story, the production and execution gets to be smoother and feel more realistic so the audience could relate to the characters more.

Destined to be Yours premieres February 27 after Encantadia (2016) on GMA Telebabad.
