In a few weeks’ time, Filipinos in Dubai are in for the next music experience to watch as some the best acts covering different genres both from the Philippines and Dubai, will fuse together their talent for “One Music X” happening November 3 at the Dubai Media City Amphitheater.
Part of the elite ensemble is Soul Supreme KZ Tandingan, considered one of the most respected artists of her generation because of her unique and soulful singing style, plus talent in writing songs.
KZ attributes her success which all started when she was hailed as the first grand winner of the talent search show “X factor Philippines” in 2012, to hard work and perfect timing. Her “X Factor” win paved the way for more people take noticing of her talent and that led to a series of well-loved singles, including the “Himig Handog 2014” song of the year “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako”, which became her first biggest hit.
The 25-year-old soul-jazz-RnB performer did not stop there. She continued to reinvent her sound and style, which her fans have come to look forward to whenever she releases a new single or covers a song.
“Sobrang dami kong gustong gawin pero ang hirap pagsabay-sabayin. Pero we still have some tricks up our sleeves. So iyon ang kailangan nilang abangan, iyong aking mga hino-hold back pa — para may aabangan pa rin sila (There are still a lot that I want to do for my fans, but I want to do it one step at a time. Definitely, they can expect that we still have some tricks up our sleeves)”, says Tandingan.
With everything she has done with her talent in the past six years, Tandingan has earned the respect of her fellow artists in the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) industry, with some even collaborating with her.
For one, Ebe Dancel, the original singer and composer of the song “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak”, performed a different version of the song with her and has now become the national anthem of sorts of ABS-CBN TV series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano”, also seen outside the Philippines via TFC’s various platforms.
However, despite the respect and admiration that she is receiving from her fellow artists, Tandingan’s feet is planted flatly on the ground.
During the recently held “One Music X” grand press conference, she got emotional after DJ Chikay of Tag 91.1 revealed to that three of her songs are in the top 10 songs of the only Filipino radio station in the UAE.
On the top of the list is her song “Two Less Lonely People”, an original hit by the international duo Air Supply; followed by her latest single “Labo”; and third, a collaboration with Noel Cabangon for the song “Kahit Kailan” — the original hit of the OPM band South Border.
In the early years of her career, Tandingan recalled that she used to do a front act for the Rock Icon of His Generation Rico Blanco in one of his shows in the Middle East, and that time felt that people do not know her nor her songs. Now, with so much support from her fans in the Middle East, she wants to express her gratitude by giving an all-out performance during her set at the “One Music X” music festival.
“Kung napapanood ninyo po ako mag-perform nang live or kahit sa videos, expect that and nothing less”, she teased about the set she’s preparing for the music fest. “Kakantahin ko do’n ‘yong mga kasama doon sa top three. Bibigyan ko rin sila ng something unexpected, and also give them something they are familiar with para they get the best of both worlds (They will have the best of both worlds — I will give them an unexpected performance, and also perform songs they are familiar with)”, she concludes.
