South Korean singer and songwriter 10CM shares how he discovered Filipino music

Known for being the voice behind the music of hit South Korean dramas like Hotel del Luna (“Lean On My Shoulders”), Crash Landing On You (“But It’s Destiny”), Start Up (“Where is Dream”) and the recently concluded Queen of Tears (“Tell Me It’s Not a Dream”), 10CM has been a household name in South Korea and for some international fans consciously and unconsciously because while they may not know who the singer is, they know his songs by heart.

That’s why Filipino fans are excited as he is having his first-ever concert in the Philippines this August 31, at the New Frontier Theater in Cubao, Quezon City.

But before that, you might have already seen him in some events. For instance, his brief performance in TJ Monterde’s concert.

10CM has been vocal about how he loves TJ Monterde’s song ‘Palagi.’ During the bloggers’ conference held in partnership with Cornerstone and the Philippine Entertainment Bloggers’ Association, when asked about an advise for aspiring singer and songwriters, he just said, “make more songs like Palagi.”

But how did he discover Filipino music and what made him love Palagi in spite of the language barriers?

(via translator) “Yung Filipino songs kasi katulad siya ng style ng 10CM. Kung ano ‘yung mga kinakanta ko, parang ‘yan din ‘yung nararamdaman ko kapag nakikinig ako sa Filipino songs. And ‘yung Palagi, I can’t understand ‘yung buong meaning pero I actually searched ‘yung meaning ng Palagi and I know na Palagi in English is Always.”

10CM is a South Korean indie pop project led by singer Kwon Jung-yeol. 10CM debuted in 2010 as a duo with Yoon Cheol-Jong being the other half. However, Cheol-Jong left the duo in 2017, leaving Jung-yeol to carry the “10CM” name as a solo artist to this day.

10CM has won the Best Collaboration Award at the Melon Music Awards in 2022 and the Best Folk & Blues Album award also at the Melon Music Awards but in 2016.

As of writing, 10CM will also be playing in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan as part of the Asia tour.
